Student Artwork on Display

By: Jessica Rivas

Participants in our education program, A Golden Vision, are asked to submit an art project to be displayed in the museum upon their completion of the program. The art project gives students an opportunity to express what they learned about California history and the growth of Los Angeles through art. We also hope that by displaying the student artwork in our museum the students families will be motivated to visit the museum and the students can receive recognition for the great work they put into the program. It is our hope that we can encourage participating students to continue their exploration of history outside of the classroom.

Instructions for a project entitled “California on a Crate” are included in the teacher material packets and most of the participating teachers chose to have their students complete this project. Students are taught how historically, farmers would ship their produce in wooden crates. In order to make their product more appealing, companies began to include art and catchy names on their labels. Sports, animals, flowers, patriotism, and missions were some of the themes used. The vibrant label art caught the attention of buyers and helped boost California’s image as a state with excellent farming regions, natural beauty, and quality produce. Much of the children’s artwork follows the historic blueprint for a crate labels by featuring colorful drawings of their produce, a theme, and often a fabricated city of origin (the name of the city is often related to the artists own name).

Other teachers chose a variation of the “California on a Crate” suggestion and their students produced brochures, posters, and a large display with artwork and historical information. One teacher’s project however completely exceeded our expectations. Mrs. Bingener’s class from Woodworth Elementary created a replica of the Hale House “based on their recollections and imaginings.” This wonderful piece of art is currently on display in the Palms Depot and is a must-see. Anyone who views this project is able to see that these students truly engaged with the artifacts of the museum and were inspired to think about what life in a Victorian home would be like.

I invite everyone to come by the museum and take a look at all of the wonderful projects created by the 2007-2008 A Golden Vision participants.
