If you have been on a tour at Heritage Square in the last few months, you may have encountered the new stars of Heritage Square and no it is not new artifacts. The stars I am talking about are so exciting that guides have reported having to stop their tours to wait for the visitors to calm down in the wake of a sighting. Adults have to be told to stop chasing after them and children draw pictures of them when describing their visit to Heritage Square. In fact, the stars are a family that spends their days on the grounds of Heritage Square.
They have captured the hearts of our staff, guides, and visitors. Their exact home is unknown but every morning, the mother and her little ones pass through the fence to feed and play on the grounds. Seeing how her young have grown has become a pastime of staff and volunteers and while on tour, many visitors often stop to watch them scratch and run in the garden. The school children on their field trips get very excited to see this family and often mention the chickens as one of the highlights of their trip.
That’s right, the exciting, distracting, and loveable stars of Heritage Square is a family of chickens. The mother hen and her two chicks have quickly become our biggest attraction. The next time you’re here, be sure to listen for scratching, as you may be in the presence of the stars of Heritage Square.

Oh those lovely little creatures! I had the opportunity once to see a rather large crane or heron land on the grounds a couple years back. It was quite intimidating standing almost 4 feet tall!
ReplyDeleteThat's too funny! Great blog. Keep up the good work.

ReplyDeleteShe originally had something like 10 chicks, when they were wee. I remember them camping around at the "Spaced" TV pilot shoot. But perhaps HSM's 2 local red-tailed hawks, or Homer Street's ubiquitous dogs culled the flock a bit. I hope they were given away instead. They seemed to grow really fast though.
