Thank You Volunteers

At Heritage Square Museum we are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers. We could not do it without your help. So many events from Museums of the Arroyo Day to our Holiday Lamplight Celebration are successful because of your help. The staff all agrees, Heritage Square Museum has the best volunteers. As a small token of our appreciation, we would like to offer all volunteers with a 20% discount in the store on September 27-28th and October 11-12th. Don't forget to come in and see the new merchandise including lace parasols and an 1854 temperance novel Ten Nights in a Bar Room. The volunteers at Heritage Square are wonderful and I look forward to seeing many of you this weekend. Thank you for all your help at Heritage Square, we couldn't do it without you!

The Campaign for Heritage Square

Dear Friends:

We would like to offer you a special opportunity to assist Heritage Square in becoming an even greater museum. As part of a new campaign for restoration and programs at the museum, we invite you to join the museum as Contributing or Heritage Square Society members.

The Campaign for Heritage Square is critical to our continued success and we hope you will consider helping us during this time of expansion in anticipation of our 40th Anniversary in 2009. As a special bonus for all who participate, on September 20 we are offering a Behind the Scenes tour. In addition, you will receive a six-month extension on your membership. Tours for this event begin at 4:00 PM and run every 20 minutes, with the last tour departing at 5:20 PM. Following the tour will be a special members’ reception in the Perry House dining room.

To make a contribution and to RSVP for the at the same time, please call the office at (323) 225-2700 ext. 222
Have you ever wondered what is behind that door or under those stairs?

For the first time, Behind the Scenes gives you access to special areas, including upstairs of a selection of our historic structures not on view to the public. These tours provide an opportunity to discover the restoration process first-hand, see our newest historical acquisitions, experience a never-before-seen living history presentation, and be among the first to learn exciting news regarding the future of the museum!

Along with the other members of the Board of Directors and museum staff , I am looking forward to meeting you and other supporters of the museum in a fun, casual atmosphere where good food and spirits, light music and festivities will enliven our evening.

To be a part of the Campaign for Heritage Square or for more information, please call Brian Sheridan, Director of Development at (323) 225-2700 ext. 222 or print our and send in your membership form by visiting
www.heritagesquare.org/member_app.htm to make your donation right away. We thank you again for your support and look forward to seeing you on September 20th.

The Great LA Ice Cream Social

Some of you may remember last year's Great Ice Cream Social at Heritage Square Museum. The event raised critical funds to begin important restoration work on the the Mt. Pleasant Residence. The ice cream social is an annual event put on by museum friend and volunteer John Bwarie. Each year, John focuses on a different project for his event.

This year, the focus of John's attention is LA Commons, an organization working to build cultural awareness of LA's diverse neighborhoods. The event will be September 27, from 2 to 4:30 at the historic, 1937 Merry-Go-Round in Griffith Park. For more information and to rsvp, please visit

Be sure to also check out Heritage Square's upcoming events on our website at http://www.heritagesquare.org/calendar_of_events.htm. Of interest - a special, Behind the Scenes Tour, the Magical Musical Memoribilia Sale and the always-popular Halloween and Mourning Tours.

Integration in California Schools

By Leticia Muñoz

Brown vs. Board of Education, 1954, was a landmark US Supreme Court decision integrating schools across the country. In California, this monumental case had little effect. California public schools had already integrated thanks to a Mendez vs. Westminster, 1946. With the help of the League of United Latin American Citizens, four families, led by Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez (right) sued four Orange Countyschool districts to integrate their schools on behalf of 5,000 Mexican American families. During the trial, the Westminster School Board tried to argue that Segregation was not due to race, but language skills. When 11 year old Sylvia Mendez (left) took the stand, she quickly proved this argument false with her command of the English language. The Court ruled in favor of Mendez and his co-plaintiffs. When the school district appealed the ACLU, NAACP, American Jewish Congress and Japanese American Citizens League all provided support to Mendez. In 1947 the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the previous ruling. California Governor Earl Warren then called for the California legislature to integrate all schools across California.

Mendez vs. Westminster set the legal precedence for Brown vs. Board of Education. Today 17th Street Elementary School has been renamed for the Mendez family and the court case is commemorated in a 2007 US Postal stamp.
