Preservation Heroes Honored at 40th Anniversary Fundraiser presented by US Bank

Los Angeles, CA – On November 7th, L.A. City Councilman Ed Reyes will honor three individuals who have made significant contributions to the Preservation of Los Angeles History. Held at the San Antonio Winery, the celebration will mark the museum’s 40th Anniversary. In 1969, Heritage Square Museum began its mission to preserve the history of Southern California, eventually saving eight historic structures. Forty years later, it is one of the leading living history museums in Southern California, dedicated to telling the story of the development of Los Angeles.
Honored during the evening will be Justin Gershuny, an architect who helped found Heritage Square Museum in 1969; Natalie Meyer, who has been instrumental in beginning the museum’s signature docent costuming program over 15 years ago, and Nancy Rhinehart, whose philanthropic support for history helped bring about countless living history events. Each of these individuals have given countless hours and donations to other similar organizations, including the Costumer’s Guild West, Historical Society of Long Beach, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple and many others. Also in attendance will be Troy Evans of E.R. fame and Academy Award co-host Jane Monreal.
Heritage Square Museum has seen remarkable growth in 2009. With an aggressive slate of exciting programs, events and exhibits, the museum has experienced record attendance. In 2010, Heritage Square is planning its greatest period of expansion in decades. A new drugstore (complete with original furnishings), the recreation of historic windows on the Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church, an expansion of the Victorian Fence Project, important infrastructure improvements and more are planned to meet the museum’s growing needs make for more exciting opportunities for all of its International, National and Southern California visitors.

As Heritage Square Museum embarks on this aggressive period of expansion in years, Southern Californians are invited to join them to experience the historic San Antonio Winery as never before. This event will help us raise critical funds for Heritage Square Museum to continue for another 40 years. The Fundraiser begins at 1:30 p.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Honorary Event Chair, Councilman Ed Reyes, will be in attendance and making a special presentation. Tours of the San Antonio Winery and wine tasting reception are from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., with the luncheon buffet beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The 40th Anniversary Fundraiser is generously sponsored by US Bank, Sempra Energy / Southern California Gas Company, Pankow Builders and Davis Blue Print. Admission to the event is $125 per ticket and is tax-deductible. Call (323) 225-2700 ext. 221 for more information.

Seamstresses add unique perspective to Halloween

Something new has been added to the 6th Annual Halloween and Mourning Tours. Inside the Longfellow-Hastings Octagon will be two seamstresses and examples of mourning attire from the Civil War, Edwarian and Victorian-era. Also shown will be samples of complimentary mourning attire, which can best be described as clothing warn to support those who are directly griveing or after the death of a famous personage.

Held October 24 and 25 from 12 pm to 4 pm, Halloween Mourning Tours gives you an in-depth look at death and mourning etiquette during the Victorian era. Join us to be able to participate in a funeral inside one of our historic homes, experience the movement of Spiritualism, have your future foretold by a fortune teller, see how other cultures celebrate and remember their loved ones as we look at the Mexican traditions and customs of Los Dias de los Muertos.

On Sunday, (Oct 25), the Halloween and Mourning Tours program is more family friendly. Children ages 2 to 12 may come in costume, play period games, make 19th century harvest crafts, choose a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch (while supplies last), and listen to spooky stories in the Ford House by the San Gabriel Valley Storytellers.

Halloween Mourning Tours are made possible thanks to the support of Las Cazuelas and the State Farm office of Joe Dupree

The program runs from 12 to 4 p.m. each day. Museum admission is $10.00 for Adults, $8.00 for Seniors over 65, $5.00 for Children 6 to 12 years, and Free for Children under 6 and Museum members. For more information about Halloween and Mourning Tours, call the museum offices from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (323) 225-2700.

Michael White Adobe

Perhaps some of you may have seen the saga of the Michael White Adobe in the L.A. Times. This historic buildintg, on the grounds of San Marino High School, is in danger of being torn down and our friends from San Marino Heritage asked that we post something about it. The following is a brief background on the building and current plans. Also visit www.sanmarinoheritage.org for more info.
---
What is the Michael White Adobe? Here's the brief story: "The adobe was constructed in 1845
by Michael White, a European sailor who adopted the name Miguel Blanco and became a Mexican citizen so he could own land in California, which was under Mexican rule at the time. White's mother-in-law was Eulalia Perez de Guillen Marine, who worked at the San Gabriel Mission and owned land that eventually become part of Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Marino." Mlguel Blanco's (pictured at left) adobe is one of the oldest buildings in the San Gabriel Valley and hisstory is a triumph of multiculturalism set in the 1840s - a critical juncture in the history of our state. His mother-in-law, Eulalia Perez de Guillen Marine (photograph right) was, in her day, the most influential woman in Southern California.
The Adobe is located at: 2701 Huntington Drive, San Marino, CA 9 1108
Why does the Michael White Adobe need to be saved? The San Marino School District,
including board of education members Jeanie Caldwell, Jeng Yen, C. Joseph Chang, Karen
Preston and Chris Norgaard, want to knock down this 164-year-old adobe to expand their hgh
school swimming pool. Yes, you read that correctly. San Marino Hgh School was founded around
what was then a 100-year-old adobe. The sports fields have completely engulfed the old building.
In the past few years the school district has spent $35 million on infrastructure to the high
school, and exactly $0 on the adobe (which is actually pretty well preserved - it isn't just a ruin)
and now that they're out of money, it's called an "economic downturn," and they want to pave it
until funds become available to expand the pool. What? Exactly! The Michael White Adobe is
about to become another casualty of "progress."
How can I help? First, educate yourself! The relevant documents are posted on
http://ravenjake.vox.com/ If you are able to volunteer, organize or have more questions,
e-mail: save.the.adobe@gmail.com
Second: Write some e-mails. The San Marino Board of Education members are Jeanie Caldwell,
Jeng Yen, C. Joseph Chang, Karen Preston and Chris Norgaard. Let them know you think this is
a bad idea. They are stealing history from our grandchildren!
Third: Attend the board of education meeting on October 27 (Tuesday).
THIS MAY BE OUR LAST CHANCE TO SAVE THIS HISTORIC BUILDING
7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.. Location: District Office Board Room
